Montgomery County Historical Society

Your Key to understanding the historic Mohawk Valley
and the influential & complex Johnson family
which helped shape the northeastern America we live in today.
What is MCHS?

MCHS is a non-profit organization established in 1905 to collect and preserve Mohawk Valley history for the enrichment of the public. Old Fort Johnson, the 18th century home of Sir William Johnson and the current home of the MCHS, houses period rooms, special long and short term exhibits as well as an excellent research library.

Why is it important to preserve?
Fort Johnson, its exhibits and the programs of MCHS represent an opportunity to use our historical resources to instruct and delight. Fort Johnson itself is a unique and irreplaceable historical asset that has been designated as a National Historical Monument. The society is committed to timely and professional care and management of the Fort, and we accept the responsibility of maintaining these resources for future generations.

Why is my support needed?
Your support is needed if we are to continue to ensure the long-term preservation of Fort Johnson, a National Historic Landmark, and its collections. We also need your help so that we may continue to provide ongoing historical programming about Sir William Johnson and the culture of Montgomery County and the Mohawk Valley.
